When you listen to materials, do they have a gender? For example, is concrete femine or masculine?

When I think about a material,I try not to have stereotype. 
Natural materials are hidden a lot of the possibilities just not what we noticed.
So if we are honesty and obedient to ourself,it gives an answer of more than expected.
If you trust yourself strongly,they will surely meet your expectation.
It is my originality that I try to often use concrete as masculine material.
I think you may be caught in any image material, if you do not just even to forgot wish that material rejoice.

Universality is born in freedom and tolerance.
We must take care to stereotype.
Even if you have used the masculine material masculine, it is not necessarily become masculine architecture。
The feeling of your architecture is born from your unconsciousness.

The unconsciousness is born from living well.

Do you think architects need a religion or a deep philosophy to make good architecture? Louis Kahn talks about architecture beginning from "the immeasurable"; Peter Zumthor talks about the presence of "something bigger in the world"; and the Japanese understanding of materials borrows from the infinite power of nature.

In order to design  good architecture, it is necessary to send a fulfilling life.Therefore a view on religion (not a religion) and a philosophy is necessary for us. 
Why is a view of religion rather than a religion?  Sadly religion make a division there is also a school of philosophy. What I want to create is a universality.
So when I design, I am not brought a particular religion and philosophy.Sure thing is just life and love for us.My architecture of subject is there. But I think very good thing to believe in a religion and philosophy in each for us to live well. 

 "The immeasurable" and "something bigger in the world" that I interpret is just life and love. Life and love is evidently the infinite power of nature.

When you design an architecture, what is the role of some artificially-made materials like steel, iron and glass?

When I think about a material, main element of my judgment is what they can communicate with us, and what they are ageing. It is not important thing whether artificial material.Just because some artificial materials have a standard, I will design it carefully.
Actually it is not important thing too.The important thing is to love the material like family, to be in love the material, what is given to them. The material is a family, and it is your own. If the design in such thoughts , the material will surely be loved by the client's family. In thinking about material, we will be able to realize that an architecture does not provide only the function and safety to us.

How is the Japanese understanding of nature unique and different from other culture's understanding? How is it similar?

It may be said that an architecture is a device experiencing relations with person and nature. Therefore I may find a new viewpoint by comparing the natural feeling of the Westerner with the unique Japanese natural feeling.

A Westerner is confrontational if I say simply, and a Japanese is like standing side by side. 

Nature lived together not an object to overcome for a Japanese. we always groped for moderate how to get along nature. 

Manufacturing shows it well. It was not too made at all and worked while accepting a natural phenomenon without being going to control all.

In the case of me, I make an architecture without always going against a form (will) of nature which is inherent in material by receiving it while expecting the truth (eternity) beyond the human intellect. 

There is providence of the space in material, and it is the characteristic of we Japanese to be going to create the architecture without going against providence of the space. 

The Japanese expression is always  co-operation with nature. It is a sense of beauty that is born from a unique humility for nature called just to "entrust" and "receptive to."

The important thing is,  how much sharper can capture the truth born from  materials and a moment of the once-in-a-lifetime chance,  and how much better representation possible.

I want to ask you about the shape of some architecture.

I try to make a simple and easily understandable shape as possible.
Especially in the plan, it likes a traditional japanese architecture and a old western church.
Eccentric, radical,and novelty shape and plan disturb the architecture that I want to make.
We can make a architecture beautiful enough, though if it is a simple like a traditional japanese architecture. If you can not make a beautiful architecture,I think it's because that you can not throw away the selfishness. We can make  beautiful things even in a situation that we can not be expressed freely our originality as realistic painting. I think the beauty is born from there has reached a certain universality. I think that I do not try to find temporary beauty and novelty to a architecture. 

Why do Hachiryu House and new project have a cylindrical shape?

I have  clear some reasons.
If I can say a few reasons,

About Hachiryu house,
1, From the image of family, especially the husband is a little fat, he was like the Poo.
2, Since I thought to a round house to that site look good.

About new project
1,The client required a simple, no useless and functional house with no passage.

The impression has no reason.
The rich imagination isn't born from limited functions and meaning.
It should not think a architecture analytically.
You should believe yourself.
Be honest in your impulses and thoughts in your mind.
There is no need to hurry.
Someday originality is born naturally, if you keep think the architecture
